On 13 May 2026, representatives of the Latgale Special Economic Zone (Latgale SEZ) and Alūksne Municipality invited entrepreneurs, manufacturers, municipal representatives and other interested parties to a meeting to provide information on the opportunities offered by the SEZ within the framework of the informative seminar “Latgale SEZ – the Key to Success in Business”.
As previously reported, on 12 March 2026, amendments to the Latgale SEZ Law entered into force, providing for the inclusion of the territory of Alūksne Municipality in the Latgale Special Economic Zone.
Furthermore, at the Cabinet of Ministers meeting on 12 May 2026, amendments were approved to Regulation No. 840 “Regulations on the Area of the Territory of the Latgale Special Economic Zone, the Procedure and Criteria for Determining and Updating the Boundaries of its Territory”, designating a 2,000-hectare territory in Alūksne Municipality to which the Latgale SEZ regulation applies.
Representatives of the Latgale Special Economic Zone introduced the seminar participants to the advantages offered by the SEZ – the available tax and direct tax relief, eligible investments, sectors that are not supported, and the procedure for obtaining the status of a Latgale SEZ company. Participants were also provided with an insight into the development of existing Latgale SEZ companies, implemented investment projects and business achievements in various sectors.
Opening the seminar, Chairman of Alūksne Municipality Council Dzintars Adlers emphasised that becoming a full-fledged partner of Latgale SEZ is a highly significant event for Alūksne Municipality and its entrepreneurs.
“I would like to thank our colleagues from Latgale municipalities for welcoming us into the Latgale Special Economic Zone. It would be very difficult for us to establish our own economic zone on our own, while Latgale has already demonstrated its ability over the years to attract investment and promote business development. We hope that this instrument will also help Alūksne Municipality attract new investors, support business growth and create new jobs,” said Dz. Adlers.
He emphasised that the economic resilience of the eastern border areas is particularly important: “Security, economic growth and additional support mechanisms for border areas are currently very important. The resilience of the population is closely linked to employment opportunities, quality of life and confidence in the future of their territory.”
Head of Administration of the Latgale Planning Region (LPR) and Manager of Latgale SEZ Iveta Maļina-Tabūne, addressing the participants, noted that the accession of Alūksne Municipality to Latgale SEZ expands support opportunities for entrepreneurs in Latvia’s eastern border area and strengthens the overall development potential of the region.
“The inclusion of Alūksne Municipality in the Latgale Special Economic Zone is a significant benefit both for entrepreneurs and for the entire region. Latgale SEZ is a practical instrument that helps entrepreneurs grow: to plan investments, expand production, create new jobs and strengthen competitiveness. Our goal is to ensure that entrepreneurs in Alūksne Municipality not only know about this opportunity, but also actively use the possibility to receive tax relief for the implementation of their development projects,” emphasised I. Maļina-Tabūne.
Deputy Manager of Latgale SEZ Vladislavs Stankevičs and Marketing Project Manager of the Latgale SEZ Administration Anna Jaudzema introduced entrepreneurs to the practical conditions for obtaining SEZ status and implementing investment projects. “It is important for entrepreneurs to understand that SEZ support is closely linked to specific investments in the development of a company. These may include investments in equipment, technologies, production buildings, infrastructure or the creation of new jobs. The earlier a company assesses its plans and consults with the Latgale SEZ Administration, the more accurately the documentation can be prepared and the available tax relief can be used,” noted V. Stankevičs.
The Latgale SEZ Administration invites entrepreneurs who are planning investments in business development, expansion or the creation of new jobs to contact the Administration’s specialists in order to assess the possibility of applying for the status of a Latgale SEZ company and using the support instruments provided by law.
