The educational level of all economically active inhabitants of Latgale is divided as follows:

- Elementary or lower (17%)
Schools prepare experts for a multitude of industries.
The range of experts include these industries:
- Mechanical engineering and metalworking;
- Construction, building;
- Energy, electronics and automation;
- Food production;
- Textile production;
- Tourism and recreation;
- Hotel and restaurant services;
Currently there are two Universities in the region – Rezekne University and Daugavpils University.
The seventh largest state established university. Leading technology center in Eastern Latvia that provides modern laboratories and is valued by employers. Currently provides 40 full-time and part-time programs (bachelors, masters and doctor level studies). Diplomas received from the University of Rezekne carries a seal of approval from European Commission.
Rezekne University has invested especially in providing experts in engineering. The University has a class in mechatronics with highly sophisticated equipment for practice.
The University has been around for almost half a century. It is one of the largest state owned education facilities that offers certified diplomas in higher education. There are 5 faculties and 53 different programs.
A new section was opened in 2014 for natural sciences and technology. 9 laboratories are now open to students an researchers.
